For the umpteenth time, Nigerians are expressing rage on social media for a call to scrap the special operatives of Nigeria Police Force Special Anti-Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS.
The social media rage, about a year ago, got the attention of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who, as the acting president, directed the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to immediately overhaul the management and activities of SARS.
Osinbajo said that based on the persistent complaints and reports on the activities of SARS that border on allegations of human rights violations, there should be overhaul of the management and activities of SARS to ensure that any unit that would emerge from the process should be intelligence-driven.
Following Osinbajo's order, the former police chief came up with a new arrangement to address complaints and allegations on human rights violations against some of the personnel of the special operatives.
However, the reform has not yielded any meaningful change as many Nigerians, especially the youths, continue to suffer in the hands of the SARS operatives who are supposed to be protecting them,
As the social media rage continues, a Twitter user, @etz_Collins, narrated how some SARS operatives arrested his younger brother, a secondary school student, and asked the family to pay N20,000 for his release.
The brother, according to him, was arrested on his way back from holiday lesson, and was arbitrarily tagged a cultist/armed robber.

In a related development, an Enugu-based also shared his experience with a bribe-seeking SARS officer on Benin expressway.
The self-described tile dealer, who goes by the name @Cyryl90 on Twitter, narrated that he was confronted by police officer who accused him of internet fraud after seeing his bank alert.
According to him, the SARS officer went through his phone chats, messages and pictures before concluding on collecting a share of his money.
Cyryl90 said he was eventually forced to give the officer N31,000 from his hard earned money after he threatened to ''waste'' him on the expressway.
