In the late hours of Monday, August 19, the operatives of the Nigeria Police (IRT) re-arrested the notorious kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume. He was re-arrested in his hideout at Layin Mai Allo Hotoro area of Kano state, according to the police. Wadume was first arrested on Tuesday, August 6, and was being taken to Jalingo by the police team when some soldiers opened fire on the police operatives who arrested him. The soldiers freed Wadume and killed three police officers and two civilians in the process.
Investigations are already ongoing to unravel the mystery behind the actions of the soldiers. Wadume's arrest, as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has noted, "will no doubt, help in bringing answers to the numerous but hitherto unanswered questions touching on the incident and the larger criminal enterprise of the suspect".

Background
1. Wadume's real name is Hamisu Bala. His nickname is “Why Do You Mean?”, which many mistakes for “Wadume,” according to The Nation.
2. He is a Hausa man whose great grandfather migrated from Katsina state. He was born and brought up in Ibi local government area of Taraba state. His late father, Bala, was Hausa, while his mother was Tiv, from Ukum local government area of Benue state.

Education
3. Wadume holds a secondary school certificate, having attended the Government Secondary School (GSS) Ibi.
“He completed secondary school in 2004 and did not proceed to any tertiary institution,” The Nation-states, quoting one of his classmates.

Profession
4. Wadume is a petty fish trader, painter, politician, polygamist with many children and a philanthropist. He specialized in buying and selling fish in Ibi. He was not, however, a successful trader “He was not even a big trader; he could only afford to buy only one or most of the time, half a basket of fish to sell at retail prices,” an anonymous source told The Nation.

5. During the 2019 general elections, Wadume aspired to become a House of Assembly member, representing Ibi Constituency, on the platform of the Young Democratic Party (YDP). He, however, did not make it.

6. In the last two years, Wadume reportedly built houses for his friends and donated hundreds of motorcycles and cars to young men and women. He is also believed to be generous to security agents. “Sometimes he (Wadume) goes to tea sellers and settles the bills of tea drinkers. Then, he gives N10,000 each to the people,” a source in Ibi also told The Nation.
7. Two of his wives have been under house arrest. His other two wives are reportedly in Mecca on pilgrimage.
