The summer transfer window has seen a number of top European clubs strengthen their squads, but there were still some players who could have been signed.
Here, we take a look at five players whose contracts expire at the end of the 2019/20 season:
5. Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen has been a rock in the defence for Tottenham Hotspur ever since he joined the club from Ajax in 2012. The Belgian's influence has gradually grown over the years at north London and he has established himself as the first-choice under manager, Mauricio Pochettino.
The 32-year-old's contract with the club expires at the end of the 2019/20 season and while has shown an interest in extending his stay, nothing has come out of it as yet.
Spurs stats
Appearances: 285
Goals: 10
Trophies won: 0
4. Toby Alderweireld
Another key defender for Tottenham Hotspur , Toby Alderweireld's contract runs out at the end of the season and it has come to light that he is willing to run down his deal and leave Spurs at the end of the season for free.
The Belgian is widely considered to be one of the best in the world, and has been on the radar for a number of top clubs. It is surprising that no club made a move for him in the recently concluded transfer window.
Spurs stats
Appearances: 165
Goals: 6
Trophies won: 0
3. Dries Mertens
Dries Mertens has been arguably Napoli's best player over the past three years and it is surprising to see that the club have not agreed to fresh terms with the Belgian so far. It is understood that Mertens is waiting for a signal from the club over his future as he reportedly wants to remain in Naples for the forseable future.
Napoli stats
Appearances: 280
Goals: 110
Trophies won: 2
2. Edinson Cavani
Edinson Cavani joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2013 and has been very prolific for them netting 194 goals in 281 appearances in all competitions, winning the Golden Boot on two occasions in 2016 and 2017.
The Uruguayan's contract with the Ligue 1 champions expires at the end of the season, and while he has revealed that he will see out his contract, links with a move to David Beckham owned, Inter Miami side have since emerged.
PSG stats
Appearances: 281
Goals: 194
Trophies won: 18
1. Christian Eriksen
Christian Eriksen's future has been a source of speculation ever since the summer transfer window opened, with the Dane midfielder confirming that he is looking for a new challenge in the future.
While he was being linked to Real Madrid and
Manchester United , nothing came out of it and unless any club makes a last ditch effort, it looks likely that he will remain with Tottenham Hotspur atleast this season.
Spurs stats
Appearances: 277
Goals: 66
Trophies won: 0
