5 Arsenal Summer Transfer Target. by IamImanuel(m): 12:34am on March 15
Matthijs de Ligt
The Ajax wonderkid has emerged as a shock transfer target for the Gunners in recent weeks as it's been reported that they've scouted the Netherlands international on numerous occasions over the past 12 months.
Interestingly, amid links to becoming Arsenal's new director of football, Marc Overmars named de Ligt as the first player he would look to sign if he was to join another club.
"For me, De Ligt can play easily for any of the six best teams in the world. Right now, he has the power, the mentality. He has the heart. If I worked at another club, I would like to sign him immediately," he told AS .
"We do not need to sell him, we do not need the money, why be too rich? But I know he will go to one of the big ones."
Admittedly the north London outfit's chances of landing the teenager are slim as it is given the likes of Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich are said to be interested too.
Those chances would more or less evaporate should they crash out of the Europa League and subsequently fail to secure a top four finish in the Premier League this season.
Kalidou Koulibaly
There is little doubt that Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly would be a signing that the majority of the Gunners faithful would like to see come to fruition.
In a transfer survey conducted by football.london in the January transfer window, a whopping 90.6% of people polled suggested a new centre-back was top of the list and Koulibaly was the one that stood out as the one dream signing.
Hopes of landing the Senegal suffered a set-back following comments made by the 27-year-old last month.
"I am flattered and it’s pleasing to know, but I am concentrated only on Napoli and proving what I can do on the pitch," he told Rai Sport, as reported by Football Italia .
"There is a lot of motivation for me at Napoli, we want to prove we’re at the top level and I want to keep improving here."
Koulibaly is likely to cost any interested party somewhere in the region of £80million - a sum that would likely rule Arsenal out of the chase regardless of Champions League football and without that lure it makes a deal pretty much impossible.
Nicolas Pepe
Arsenal are desperately short of natural wingers and have been linked with reinforcements in each of the two transfer windows Emery has been at the club but no deal has materialised.
And there's been plenty of links to widemen.
Last summer it was Ousmane Dembele, Kingsley Coman, Cristian Pavon and Lucas Vazquez among other, then in January Christopher Nkunku, Ivan Perisic and Yannick Carrasco were all tipped to join the club. But none did.
Expect Emery to address this problem area in the summer and football.london understands that the Gunners have a long-standing interest Lille's Nicolas Pepe who has been in impressive form this term, netting 17 times in Ligue 1 and weighing in with eight assists.
However, Pepe is unlikely to come cheap as Lille owner Gerard Lopez told RMC - as per ESPN - last week that he winger is now worth between "€50m and €80m".
As a result, it would be highly unlikely that the north London outfit would be able to sign him and strengthen their defence significantly at the same time unless they qualify for the Champions League.
Pablo Fornals
The departure of Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer to Juventus will leave a hole in the Arsenal squad which will need filling, but how much of a priority it will be remains to be seen.
In November Arsenal were linked with a move for Pablo Fornals, amid rumours he could be a replacement for Mohamed Elneny.
The report stated that Emery was hoping to raise £15m from the sale of Elneny and then use the funds to help activate the £17.8m release clause in Fornals' contract at Villarreal.
Although, Barcelona-based publication Sport (via
Sport Witness ) claim that Fornals does have a release clause in his current deal but it is in fact €40m.
That fee shouldn't put the Gunners off in terms of pursuing a deal, but with bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur as well as Serie A outfit Napoli also said to be in the race, it could be that a lack of Champions League football counts against them.
Kieran Tierney
football.london understands a new left-back is very much on the agenda at Arsenal this summer and there's been links to many who can play in this position of late.
Interest in Celtic's Kieran Tierney stretches all the way back to 2016 but he was convinced to remain at Parkhead by Brendan Rodgers, although recent developments could play into Arsenal’s hands this summer .
With the latter replacing Claude Puel as Leicester City manager, the 21-year-old could now have a big decision to make in the coming months.
However, one would expect a number of Champions League clubs to be sniffing around the Scotland international should he decide to leave and that wouldn't be good news for the Gunners especially if they miss out.
The same can be said about Ajax's Nicolas Tagliafico as well as Benfica's Alex Grimaldo who have also been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively.
